About me

teenage years

My teenage years were not spent well. I had a low self esteem and found my escape in drugs and alcohol. At 16 I ended up dropping out of school and started working construction with my dad. The drugs and alcohol never subsided and at 20 years old I landed a 11 1/2 year federal prison sentence.

This time in my life was a grand awakening for me. I found sobriety and was actually quite excited to give it a try. For the next ten years I took all of the classes that I could. I learned about computers, mechanical drafting, business, health and fitness, and most importantly I found my spiritual calling. I found Asatru (the way of the old gods and goddesses).

Asatru for me was my groundwork to evolve myself into who I would later become. I dove into the books and learned all that I could. I learned about nature and the importance of the changing of the seasons and that it is a good thing to step out of the chaos of life just to appreciate the seasonal changes. I learned about personal sacrifice to achieve goals, and self growth. I met several like minded individuals, who were on a deeper path of evolution and wanted to make changes towards their own chaotic life and to pursue greater goals. I eventually started to teach it and gave my whole heart and soul to try to motivate people towards a greater goodness in life. No matter how much time I spent pursuing this greater goal I always found time to work on Art.

My art career started when I was young. I remember drawing all the different sports logos on the basement cinder blocks of my dads house. As a teenager I was drawing on poster board different images that I thought were cool. In country jail I drew every day and this is where I met a guy who drew a portrait of me accross the table. It fascinated me and for months I spent drawing myself in the mirror, drawing all the portraits of any photo that was sent to me, or just celebrities in magazines.

When I finally made it to prison in 2004 I started ordering books on art. Perspective, light and shade, how to draw portraits etc. I spent countless hours in the quiet room drawing and learning. I signed up for art classes and learned different techniques. One art class in particular was an advanced portrait class by a man named Arthur Stellar. It was 4 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks. This was definately the most pivotal time in my art career. I learned so much out of that class that it actually ended up supporting myself in prison. I started drawing portraits for people for money so I could buy more art supplies, food, coffee hygiene etc. And the more people I drew the better I got. One day my friend asked me to try tattooing and I was intrigued.

I started started tattooing in 2005 and never looked back. I spent countless hours drawing pictures for people and tattooing them. I took on all different styles and tried my best to create a badass piece of artwork for them. I started tattooing portraits after being inspired by Kat Von D on LA ink. I already had the foundation for portraits and was a decent tattooist. I learned to refine my skills and just kept practicing. Even though tattooing wasn't allowed I found a outlet in it.

released from federal prison

Upon release from federal prison I was informed at the halfway house that I wouldn't be able to work in a tattoo shop. So I found a construction job and started tattooing as a hobby. It was hard to find the time to tattoo often yet I persisted. I ended up doing some pretty badass tattoos. As I was finding success in life something tragic happened to me. I lost the most important thing in my life. I lost my grandma. I didn't know how to cope and found my way back into the drugs and alcohol. This of course led me back to prison.

state prison

I ended up receiving a state prison sentence of 15 years for something that should have never happened. This was another huge reflection point in my life. I spent the next 8 years getting back into my foundation of Asatru and working various jobs. I strayed away from tattooing because I was trying to teach myself the discipline of following the rules. I did however continue with my art skills. I was released in 2024 and have since really focused on the bigger picture of evolution.

released from state prison

Upon release from state prison I have really set the bar high for myself. I formed a non-profit for our Asatru kindred to aid and assist former inmates in transitioning back into society. I started my own business which is Mark's Art LLC as a independent tattoo artist and a pencil portrait artist. I am really focused on doing the best art that I possibly can. Eventually my goal is to donate a portion of my profits to the non-profit and to make sure people have a fighting chance when they get out.

Through my two releases from prison I have overcome many obstacles and it was not a easy road. I hope to one day to truly be able to assist others from those same challenges.

This is my story, and although it may be unorthodox to admit the many mistakes we as humans have made, I have found that to be honest with ones past helps with the individual growth it takes to succeed.
